Samba
It was late in day, I was busy sorting & organizing the “Gathering of Donations” load for the Oklahoma Tornado relief Mission when I received the call. A dog had broken FREE of his chain, wondered into someone’s yard & collapsed in Meadowlake, Valencia County (to get a true feel for the area, see our Meadowlake Outreach album here) The dog was wearing a heavy chain around his neck, it was deeply embedded. The dog was emaciated & starving. We would later find out that he was also infected with Heartworm. I responded immediately. When I arrived, he was laying in the shade & he allowed me to approach him easily. I could see that he was terribly underweight but the severity of his starvation didn’t sink in until I put my hands on him…..he was all fur & bones 🙁 It was then that I turned my attention to the chain embedded around his neck. He had hope in his eyes, a sense of relief…I knew right then his name would be SAMBA. However it happened, that is what his eyes told me. I loaded him up & headed to the E-Vet! We are so thankful to Petroglyphs for being there for all of our after hour 911s!! Upon arrival, SAMBA weighed in at 57.4 lbs…easily 30 lbs underweight. We scanned him for a chip (which he had) & noted that he was neutered. SAMBA was then admitted & his lifesaving care began. The chain was surgically removed, he was given IV fluids, his wounds were cleaned & bloodwork was done. SAMBAS organ function was good, but he tested (+) for Heartworm. I retrieved guardian information from his microchip & also tracked his adoption to a local municipal shelter. While SAMBA remained hospitalized, I was taking the necessary steps to ensure he would NEVER have to return to the hell from which he came! With the cooperation of his originating shelter, SAMBA is was now in the legal custody of NMDOG.
For the LOVE of DOG….
